QinetiQ

Helicopter Engineering Day

Half day, 27 Oct 2026. QinetiQ landed a helicopter on site, ran a short engineering exercise and took us round the aircraft.

Flight Test Engineer, Saab 340B

Studied phugoid, short-period and other dynamic modes in real flight. Feeling those responses from the cabin, with the load swinging from around 2 g to near 0 g, made stability theory physical in a way no simulator had.

CEMAST

Engineering Practical Training

Turning, milling, hand skills, motor maintenance, pipework, soldering, gearbox strip and rebuild, sheet metal. Also machine-shop trained at Southampton (lathe, milling, FDM).

UK Space Design Competition

Operations Sub-team

5-person operations team inside a 50-person team at Southampton’s internal qualifying round (Mars logistics brief). I gave other sub-teams yes/no feasibility calls on supply routes and logistics. We didn’t advance, but it was good practice at fast cross-team gatekeeping.

Year 12

NASA Johnson Space Center · Houston

Engineering & Space Training Programme

Competitive selection. 2nd place in both the Thermal Tile Challenge and the Rocket Building Challenge (out of about 10 teams). Built and launched a model rocket independently. Touring the facilities, and standing next to a Falcon 9 and a Saturn V, re-energised me about aerospace. In the Thermal Tile Challenge our team took a different approach from everyone else, and it worked.

2022–23

Airbus ZEROe

Virtual Work Experience

Explored zero-emission concepts including the blended wing body.

Jul 2022

Leonardo UK · Yeovil

Work Experience, AW101 Merlin

One-week placement in the AW101 Merlin production environment. Manufactured wiring looms and contributed to sustainable rotor-blade development, toured production and systems engineering, and ended with a group presentation proposing a new helicopter concept. Seeing how many parts, machines and tests go into a single helicopter, down to the rotor blades, turned me from a ‘planes person’ into someone who’d happily work on helicopters too.
